This series of short stories revolve around a common theme, people who don't quite fit in with their families or society in some way. In the story Former Marine - the father is supporting himself by robbing banks, rather than be a burden to his sons. Another story "Blue" is about a black woman who goes to buy a used car but finds herself accidentally trapped in a used car lot after hours with a pit bull threatening her.
I'm not usually a fan of short stories since I always want to know what happens next to the character but Banks is a masterful writer and these stories are an easy read.
