Paperboy

Paperboy by Vince Vawter          224 pages
Victor is 11 years old in Memphis in 1959.  He loves to pitch and he loves words but he doesn’t like to speak because he has a stutter.  His best friend, Art, who he calls Rat because he has an easier time with the R sound at the beginning of words than the A sound, is leaving for a month during the summer to visit his grandparents.  Victor is going to do his paper route for him, which is mostly going to be ok, he thinks, but he’s worried about collecting the money each week because if people don’t have it ready he may have to talk to them which may or may not go well.  Victor’s summer goes about how he expects, except for a few encounters he has with a couple of the customers on his route, and with a junk man in the neighborhood.  Some of the encounters are enlightening, some are mystifying, and some are dangerous.  One in particular could place his and his families’ lives in danger.  This is a nice slice of life story that most kids would probably like, even some that don’t usually care for historical fiction.
