Cancer Vixen

Cancer Vixen by Marisa Acocella Marchetto.  224 pages

This graphic novel memoir is Marchetto's story of her diagnosis with breast cancer, and her journey from diagnosis to cure, with every challenge in between.   When she was diagnosed, Marchetto was a "shoe-crazy, lipstick-obsessed, wine-swilling, pasta-slurping, fashion-fanatic, single-forever, about-to-get-married big-city girl cartoonist with a fabulous life."   However, when a doctor found a lump in her breast, her world turned upside down.   However, she was determined to triumph over her cancer.

This is a funny, insightful book.   As a cartoonist, Marchetto is able to give a humorous (and wry) look at her situation.  However, it's not all awful; when she gets her diagnosis, she's engaged to marry a fabulous man, who is very supportive of her.   So, this story is a mix of love, and courage, and wit (and fabulous shoes).

I was actually familiar with some of Marchetto's cartoons before reading this book, although I didn't know anything about her.   I really liked how the format of a graphic novel lent a lot of emotion to her story.  You immediately understand what she's feeling because you can see it on the page.   The art gives the descriptions you need, so while the book may appear deceptively simple at first, there's a lot going on here (and surprisingly a lot of information about breast cancer).
