The Marriage Pact

The Marriage Pact by Michelle Richmond.  418 pages.

How far would you go to have a strong marriage? To show that you love and respect your partner? In this fast paced thriller, Michelle Richmond explores that concept, giving us newlyweds Jake and Alice, whose life together holds endless possibilities.  When one of their wedding guests gives them an invitation to join an exclusive group known as The Pact, they feel they're up for the challenge.  After all, the goals seem simple: keep your marriage happy and intact. Most of the rules make sense, like "exchange thoughtful gifts monthly," and "plan a trip together once per quarter." And no one really needs to worry too much about the fine print, right?

Wrong. As it turns out, The Pact is all about the fine print and enforcing the stringent rules, written in a legal-ese to confuse even an attorney.  It all seems glamorous at first, but then it becomes more and more frightening and Jake and Alice are drawn further into the group of Pact members. When one of them breaks a rule, it becomes even more terrifying.

I had eagerly anticipated this book and really liked how the author set things up and then just started increasing the pace, steadily, so that about halfway through the book, I didn't want to put it down. It's a relentless book and the story really explores how far people will go, and what the limits of love might be. It's a bit hard to believe, but then as you get sucked into the story, it doesn't sound completely implausible, and that's what makes this such a chilling (and thrilling) read.  It has a few slow moments, but I felt like this only contributed to the feeling that something worse was right around the corner and the characters were in danger.  Fun read!
