My Lovely Wife

My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing   374 pages

"Dexter meets Mr. and Mrs. Smith in this wildly compulsive debut thriller about a couple whose fifteen-year marriage has finally gotten too interesting..."

Well, with that blurb, this book definitely sounds intriguing, right?  The story is told from the viewpoint of the husband, who describes his relationship with his wife, Millicent, and their two children.  He has a good relationship with his wife, mostly because he never steps out of line and also because they have worked out a way to spice up their relationship: murder.

As the story unfolds, we learn about their history of participating in this activity and also how their relationship has progressed.  We get some backstory and then some present, so there is some back-and-forth in time that keeps building up the story.  There's a smoothly increasing pace to the story and an almost detached feel to the husband's viewpoint, so the book definitely has a chill to it.  And, as you would expect, there are some revelations and twists --- and no, no spoilers will be revealed here.

This is a great book if you enjoy dark suspense or psychological thrillers and also like stories about the dynamics between people.
