The Upside of Unrequited

The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli, 340 pages

Molly really wants to fall in love.  She’s had crushes on 26 guys, and never done anything about any of them.  Now her twin sister has a girlfriend, her cousin has a boyfriend, and her best friend has had a boyfriend since eighth grade.  Molly feels like she’s falling behind everyone else and that she’s too inadequate and overweight to ever find love.  Then she meets Hipster Will and Middle Earth Reid in rapid succession.  Will is super cute but Reid is cute too and makes her laugh.  Molly isn’t sure how she feels about either of them but feels certain that neither of them could possibly like her.  Despite the plot sounding like a cheesy romance novel, this book was amazing.  It really explored the feelings that many girls have about being inadequate, not just regarding relationships, but family, friends, and life.  I loved this book and would definitely give it to any teens looking for realistic fiction, although it would be a better book for girls.
