Piper

Piper by Jay Asher, Jessica Freeburg & Jeff Stokely, 144 pages
Maggie tells us the story of the Pied Piper of Hameln from her perspective.  A lonely, deaf girl, shunned by most of the people in her town, Maggie is fascinated by the Piper when he comes to town.  The Piper is kind to her and Maggie finds herself falling in love.  However, Maggie feels she can’t leave the woman who has cared for her through the years.  Maggie is also a little afraid of the Piper’s power and his willingness to abuse it.  This graphic novel has a slightly different, surprise ending to the original story.  It’s sad and haunting and I really liked it.  Teens that like fairy tale retellings will like this book.
