Shelter in Place

Shelter in Place by Nora Roberts  read a galley  432 pages

Even if you survive, you may find that there is nowhere safe to hide. This fast-paced story starts with a mass shooting and follows several survivors who find that even years after this incident, they may not be safe, after all. Heart-pounding and suspenseful, the story weaves together storylines of multiple characters and themes of family, love and loss.

In a typical evening outside Portland, Maine, people are shopping at a local mall, enjoying a movie, and employees are tending to customers. Everything changes when three shooters enter the mall, causing chaos and carnage for eight minutes before they are taken down. In those eight minutes, lives are changed forever. For some of the survivors, the aftermath of those eight minutes shape their lives and future decisions. Simone, who was huddled in a ladies' room during the shooting and was the first one to call 911, finds her life turning towards art, using her loss to shape her decisions. For Reed, who shelters in place in the mall, his future is dedicated to a career in law enforcement. However, there is one person who ties all of these survivors together: a person who wasn't at the mall during the shooting, but who is involved. And who is now starting to come for the survivors, one by one.

Nora Roberts boldly takes on the subject of mass shootings but gives this story her signature touches of bringing together different characters and storylines and weaving them together. Roberts has a way of showing that even in loss, there is hope and that love can sometimes be the strongest bond in the world.

Admittedly, I sometimes wish I could be one of the main characters in one of Nora Roberts' book. This book reminded me a little of the Three Sisters Island trilogy by Roberts (without the magic); there is an island that sounds like a perfect location, the main female character is beautiful, smart and artistically talented, the main male character is strong, smart and handsome, and there are some over-the-top family dynamics.  I mean, who wouldn't want to be a smart, beautiful, artistic woman with an amazing grandmother, living on an island (and who doesn't seem to have any money issues, worries about insurance, retirement or anything else)?
