Sunburn

Sunburn by Laura Lippman   308 pages

When Polly and Adam meet in a local tavern in a small town, they both have their own agendas. Polly is set on heading west and Adam is just passing through. But is he just passing through? And why does she continue to stay? Polly both excites and unnerves Adam and it's obvious that she's keeping some big secrets. However, Adam has some secrets of his own that he's keeping from Polly. Drawn into an affair, their relationship takes a turn when someone dies. Was it an accident or part of a plan? Is Polly who she says she is? Is Adam who he says he is? At some point, something in their relationship has to give . . .

This is a story that's a big game of cat-and-mouse, where the role of both cat and mouse can change as the story progresses.  It's difficult to say much about the book without giving any spoilers, but suffice to say, both Polly and Adam are hiding a lot from each other, and because of that, as well as the fact that there are other players in this game, things get tangled pretty quickly.  I liked this book and the fact that the story kept me guessing about which way things would go for the characters. I also liked that while none of the characters are truly likeable, they are at interesting (for me, Polly more so than Adam).
