Skinny Dip

Skinny Dip by Carl Hiaasen, 355 pages

Carl Hiaasen has been on my to-read list for a while. I bought a copy of Nature Girl three years ago for a bus trip and I still haven't read it, nor anything else by him, until this. A patron came in the other day looking for his newest title and peer pressured me into reading some Hiaasen. He recommended Skinny Dip as Hiaasen's best work.
The plotline was intriguing: Joey and her husband Chaz, a biologist who works in the Everglades, are on a cruise for their two-year anniversary, and Chaz decides to kill Joey by throwing her overboard. However, Joey is an excellent swimmer and manages to survive the fall into the water, ultimately by latching on to a floating bale of marijuana that she believes to be a rather friendly hammerhead shark. She floats by an island inhabited by a retired cop, Mick, and he fishes her out of the water. Joey is hurt and confused by her husband's murder attempt and she and Mick concoct an elaborate revenge plan on Chaz, which involves letting everyone believe Joey is dead.
The story moves quickly and there's some pretty hilarious parts, especially certain scenes involving Chaz's inclination to womanize.
