The Good Luck of Right Now

The Good Luck of Right Now by Matthew Quick
284 Pages

Matthew Quick is the writer of the Silver Linings Playbook which was recently made into a movie.  This is what prompted me to select this book to read.

Bartholomew Neil is a 39 year old man who recently lost his mother.  The only life he has ever really know is that he had with his mother.  In an effort to create a life he begins a one sided correspondence with Richard Gere, an actor his mother loved.  He begins a quest for a new family and life with the aid of a priest, Father McNamee, a fellow group therapy friend Max and his sister the Girlbrarian, who Bartholomew has had a crush on for a long time.

At first I wasn't sure about the book, as each chapter is a letter to Gere and details what is going on in Batholomew's life.  But after 2 or 3 chapters Quick's characters suck you into the story and not only do you want to see what happens you stop and consider the philosophy Neil was raised up on of Good Luck of Right Now.
