Go Tell it on the Mountain, by James Baldwin, 256 pages
In honor of Black History Month, I read this classic first novel by James Baldwin. John Grimes is a young man deciding upon his future, his faith, and living in 1920's Harlem, New York. The book reveals secrets- those of John and his family, and explain how things are not always as they seem. I found this to be a book full of symbolism and metaphor, and one man's fascinating, semi-autobiographical encounter with faith, class, and race. This is not an easy book to read, but it is rich and worth it.
