The Secret Box

The Secret Box by Whitaker Ringwald, 297 pages

When Jax Malone receives a mysterious package for her birthday, her mother immediately confiscates it.  She insists that it isn’t good for her and says that she is sending it back.  Jax is furious and manages to devise a plan to get it back without her mother knowing.  The package is from her great-aunt, Juniper, who Jax never knew existed.  Inside the package is a box that won’t open, but gives clues as to where she needs to go to open the box.  With the unwilling help of her cousin, Ethan, they trick, Ethan’s obnoxious older brother, Tyler, into taking them to Washington, D.C., where they believe the box will open.  Along the way, the box is stolen and the kids set off to try and get it back.  This is a fun mystery adventure story, with a little bit of fantasy and mythology thrown in that a lot of kids may enjoy.
