Watching Porn: And Other Confessions of an Adult Entertainment Journalist by Lynsey G. 320 pages.
At 24 years old, with a degree in English Lit, Lynsey G. found herself reviewing a pornographic film for an adult magazine in New York City. The job was supposed to be a temporary paycheck until she could get her legitimate writing career going, but as it turned out, she loved it. After about a decade of reviewing, she worked with a friend and founded a magazine where she had a platform to voice her observations and thoughts on the adult film world (as well as to educate people about what really goes on behind the scenes).
This book is described as provocative book about an average girl’s foray into the porn industry and the people who make it what it is, both in front of and behind the camera." While I found parts of it interesting, I don't know if I would say it's provocative. But then again, I read a lot -- so maybe that's just me.
One of the things that Lynsey writes about that I found interesting was the fact that a) people who star in these films don't necessarily make a lot of money and b) you make the most money if you're a white woman. While I wasn't surprised to learn about the lack of diversity in the adult entertainment industry, it was disappointing to learn that there's a huge lack of diversity, and also that if you're not a white woman, you definitely get paid a lot less, and are less in demand. Lynsey's writing, in particular, about the stereotypes that still exist in this industry was interesting. I also liked that the author delved into the business aspects of this industry and how when the Internet blossomed into what it is today, it completely changed the business model for a lot of people.
While there are some parts that I guess are provocative (and about what you might expect, especially when the author writes about some of the people she meets at adult entertainment conventions), this book is more informative than titillating, which made it an interesting read.
