The book was more than an entertaining trip down memory lane, I learned some really neat stuff from a totally different perspective than last time I watched a show…each of the Muppets is perpetually a certain psychological age: Elmo is 3 ½, Grover is 4, Count von Count is clearly the senior of the neighborhood at 1,832,682 years old . There is a general misperception that Big Bird and Snuffupagus are grown up due to their physical size; Bid Bird is 8’2” and Snuffy stands an even 7’. This thinking makes one believe they are not very bright, but the truth is, Big Bird is six years old and Snuffy is only 4 years old.
The most fascinating aspect of the book is the history and creation of the Muppets, their handlers (Muppeteers), and the challenges of puppeteering. I find it fascinating that Bert, Cookie Monster, and Grover are all handled by one person (Frank Oz), and Caroll Spinney manages both Big Bird and Oscar – impressive diversity! Did you know that Kermit and Ernie are the only Muppets constructed with a built-in smile? Once you know that little tidbit, you’ll be on the lookout. A lot has changed in the past twenty years since the book was published; I hope they do a 50 year anniversary edition!
