The Night Visitor by Lucy Atkins 356 pages
This book is a tautly written story of two women, both faced with the question: how far would you go to save your reputation? We have Professor Olivia Sweetman who has worked hard to achieve a life she loves with a successful career and happy family. However, even as she attends the launch of her new bestselling book, she is on the edge of panic because she's realized her life has turned out to be filled with deceit and everything could unravel in seconds.
Only one person knows what Olivia has done and that is Vivian Tester, the social awkward woman who found the Victorian diary on which Olivia's new book is based. Working as Olivia's unofficial research assistant, Vivian's life has become intertwined into Olivia's. However, Vivian has some secrets of her own and as the relationship between the two women continues, it becomes more and more complex. And then, a strange act of violence changes everything.
I really enjoyed this book, where the two viewpoints are strongly written and the story has a taut pace that never lets up. You truly get a sense of Olivia on the edge, about to come completely undone, and you wonder if Vivian is completely to blame. But is she? Maybe Olivia is just paranoid. Or maybe not. Definitely a book that keeps you guessing!!
