After Anna by Lisa Scottoline. 352 pages ARC read - book due to be published in April, 2018.
In this tautly paced, back-and-forth perspective and timeline story, a young woman's murder is explored. Dr. Noah Alderman has remarried to a wonderful woman named Maggie and for a long time, he and his son are happy. However, when Maggie's daughter, Anna, moves in with them, their lives are all turned upside down. Anna is a beautiful teenager whom Maggie gave up custody of when Anna was a baby. However, Maggie is sure that she'll have a connection with her daughter, forming a relationship quickly and bringing Anna into her fold with Noah and her stepson. However, a few weeks after Anna moves in with Maggie and Noah, Anna is murdered and Noah is accused of the crime. Did he do it?
That's what the story explores, giving Noah's perspective in the present, mostly in the courtroom on trial for Anna's murder. We also get Maggie's perspective from the weeks leading up to Anna's death. When Noah's trial decision comes down, the book springs both perspectives into the present, with Maggie trying to uncover some of the secrets about Anna. As Maggie searches for the truth, she discovers darker and darker secrets that she hadn't expected.
This book has a pretty unrelenting pace, which drives the story forward --- and at times, makes it feel like it's unfolding like a car wreck in progress. I did find that some of the story and the characters were predictable and frequently found the characters to be frustrating. However, I kept reading because I wanted to know what would happen by the end of the book. This was a fast read that kept me interested, although I don't know if I'll re-read it in the future.
