In The God of Faith and Reason, Robert Sokolowski maintains that the distinctive difference between pagan and Christian theologies is that the former considers the world as somehow necessary, while the latter posits a God whose creation of the world was entirely contingent. With pure generosity as the foundation of the world, the life of grace becomes possible, but possible only as gift. It follows that what Sokolowski describes as a theology of disclosure is the most fruitful path for Christian theologians to pursue.
