Proxy

Proxy by Alex London, 379 pages

Syd has been a Proxy for as long as he can remember.  He has never known who his Patron is, because no one does, but his Patron is always getting into trouble.  When his Patron gets into trouble, it’s Syd who is punished.  His Patron paid for his upbringing and schooling and in return, Syd is required to pay when his Patron breaks the law.  He only has two years left on his debt when his Patron kills a girl in a car accident and Syd is about to be sentenced to more than ten years in a work camp.  Instead, he escapes and attempts to find a way to get a fake i.d. set up so that he can escape the city.  That is when he meets his Patron, Knox, who actually feels guilty about the accident, the girl’s death, and Syd’s subsequent punishment.  Knox is the one who can help Syd get a new identity and, considering the circumstances, he agrees to do so.  But both of their lives are about to become much more complicated and Syd’s escape may take more work than just a new identity can handle.  A really good dystopian novel, teens who like dystopia with a lot of action will probably like this story.
