Extremities by David Lubar, 205 pages
This is a collection of short, creepy stories. These are actually pretty scary and a little
gory at times. I liked all of the
stories, although a couple were so short, they were almost unsatisfying because
I wanted just a little more. But even
the very short stories told a complete story.
One of my favorites was Blood Magic, in which a boy and an acquaintance
are caught in a robbery gone bad and taken as hostages by the robbers, who have
shot the store clerk. The narrator is
sure that he and his companion, Eddy, are going to die, but Eddy has a trick up
his own sleeve. Of course, Eddy’s tricks
could kill them as easily as the robbers’ guns.
Not all of the stories have a supernatural bent either. The first story, Running Out Of Air, is about
a group of high school girls that exact their revenge on a sadistic gym
teacher. This book will appeal to teens
who like horror fiction.
