When Rump was born his mother was unable to speak his whole
name aloud before she died so he has been known his whole life as Rump. When Rump turned 8, he stopped growing. This story takes place when he is 12 and
spends his days working in the mine, looking for gold. He lives with his grandmother, since both of
his parents are dead. The rest of the
story tells a tale that we are all familiar with, of straw spun into gold, a
bargain with a miller’s daughter and an agreement about a baby but not
everything is quite the way we might have heard the original tale. Rump’s side of the story explains a lot that
isn’t answered in the story of Rumpelstiltskin and lets the reader into Rump’s
thinking and motivations. This was an
excellent story and one that I would give any kids interested in magic or fairy
tale retellings.
