Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier. 311 pages read a galley
Georgina Shaw, known as Geo, is a rising star in her company when her world comes crashing down. Her high-school boyfriend has been found and arrested for a series of murders, including Angela, Geo's best friend in high school. Now, Geo is under arrest for helping her then-boyfriend, Calvin, hide Angela's body. In an ironic twist, it's one of Geo's close friends from high school, Kaiser Brody, who arrests her.
Geo is sent to prison for her part, and while she's serving time, Calvin escapes prison. Now, at 35, Geo is about to get out of prison and start her life over. However, someone has started committing murders, following the outline of Calvin's past crimes. Does Geo know anything that could help catch Calvin? Is she herself in danger? And what really happened that night with Angela?
This thriller starts out slow, but as it unravels, it picks up pace. There are some twists in the plot at times, some of which I anticipated and few that I didn't see coming. Geo is an interesting character; she's pretty resilient, which makes her compelling. However, in a twist revealed somewhat close to the end of the story, I found myself wondering if I really had a good sense of who she was. A few of the elements of the plot had me wondering about plausibility, but I enjoyed the book.
