One For Sorrow by Mary
Downing Hahn, 293 pages
Annie is new at school, shy, and unsure of how to make
friends. Elsie latches onto her,
claiming that they will be best friends.
It’s very clear that the other girls don’t like Elsie, and Annie quickly
realizes why. Elsie is a tattletale and
very angry. She’s mean to Annie,
pinching her and breaking her toys. Annie doesn’t want to be friends and
quickly abandons her for the other girls’ friendships. Then Elsie dies of the Spanish Influenza and
her ghost comes back to torment Annie.
She is more determined than ever that they will be best friends and this
time Annie has no idea how to get rid of her.
This is a chilling ghost story, perfect for older elementary kids.
