A Sudden Light by Garth Stein
396 Pages
Trevor Riddell is a fourteen-year-old boy whose parents are undergoing a trial separation. His mother goes to England and Trevor and his father travel to Seattle to prepare for the selling of the family house. Trevor soon finds that his father's side of the family has a great many secrets and he must uncover those secrets and the family's past to grow closer to his father and break the curse of the family.
Partly historical fiction, partly ghost story, Stein creates a fascinating portrait of a dysfunctional family. The only criticism is that Trevor doesn't talk like a 14 year old boy, but instead like a very precocious adult.
