Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant? by Roz Chast, 228 pages
Well, Katie offered an excellent review of this memoir here, and I don't want to retread what she said. However, I will say that this account of dealing with aging parents, who have perfected the art of avoidance when it comes to talking about their eventual death, is strikingly real and honest. By that I mean that, in addition to spelling out the difficulties she experienced, Chast also shares the moments of frustration, and humor that inevitably come with the sadness. Nothing in life is ever all happy or all sad, and it's commendable that Chast chooses to reveal all facets in this candid account.
No wonder this book was a finalist in the nonfiction category of the National Book Awards. A fantastic read, made all the better with Chast's expressive and quavery artwork.
