The Island Of Excess Love by Francesca Lia Block, 214 pages
This is the companion book to Love In The Time Of Global
Warming. I wasn’t crazy about the first
book and I didn’t really like this one much better. There isn’t anything wrong with the writing;
these just aren’t holding my attention very well. This book is based on the Aeneid. Pen and her friends have been getting by
since the Earth Shaker nearly destroyed the world. With help from Merc, Pen’s biological dad,
who has been bringing them food, they are surviving. However, Merc convinces them that they need
to embark on another journey, one that could end up their undoing. The whole story just feels like walking
around in a haze, with just a few moments of clarity. There doesn’t seem to be any point and very
little resolution. Teens who have read
her other books would probably want to read this and maybe teens who like
remakes of the Greek and Roman myths. I
wouldn’t necessarily recommend it.\ at all.
