Aileen is devastated when she fails her initiation. As a member of a family from a long line of magic users, she had expected something to happen. Now she must wait and try again at the next full moon but she’s sure that she’ll never measure up to her Aunt Beck. When the High King asks them to go on a quest to find the heir to the throne and bring down the magical barricade between Logra and the Chaldean Islands, Aileen is sure that she will be useless but the further they go on their quest, the more her own magic seems to come through, especially after Aunt Beck is stunned by another sorceress. Aileen must take charge of their quest and hope that she can finish what they’ve started. This is Diana Wynne Jones final book. She died during the writing and her sister, Ursula finished it. It is very well done and I couldn’t tell who wrote what. Any kids who like fantasy, adventure, and magic will enjoy this story.
