Little Broken Things by Nicole Baart 368 pages (read an e-galley)
It all starts with a text from Nora to her sister Quinn: "I have something for you." Quinn doesn't think much of this cryptic message because she hasn't seen Nora in almost a year and they aren't close. However, when Nora shows up near Quinn's house just hours later, a chain reaction is set into motion as Nora leaves a young girl with Quinn, telling Quinn to keep the girl safe and tell no one that she has her. Before Quinn can ask Nora any questions, Nora has left and Quinn finds herself the caretaker of this girl, whose features seem to mark her one of their family. Who is her mother? Who is her father? And why is this girl in danger?
This story reveals itself through multiple narrators, so you get the perspectives of Quinn, Nora, their mother and the little girl's mother. What I enjoyed was how the story became revealed, layer by layer, and you get the clear sense of what the danger is to this little girl, but you also start to understand the family dynamics at play with the two sisters and their mother. As the story continues, you learn more and think you can predict some of the story, only to have a few twists thrown in. This book is a good mix of fiction about family dynamics, with a bit of suspense/thriller thrown in.
