The Windfall by Diksha Basu Audio Book: 10 hours, 30 mins Hardback Book: 304 pages
A tale of the Jha family who live among neighbors who are a bit catty and prone to jump to conclusions – the story of the lovely widow who just knows who stole her yoga pants because she saw him watching her work out is hilarious. There are many fun laughable moments here when eastern culture meets westen and come to find out there are many more similarities than one would have first thought. I love the conversations among the ladies in this book – so funny! Steel Magnolias in America have nothing on these gals! And the way when surprise riches fall into the hands of those who have done without excess luxuries for so long – it is sweet in one way that it is so innocent and childlike to want new toys and in the other it is a little arrogant to want the things that denote status – expensive homes, body guards to make people think you have something worth guarding (gold? Jewels? Extravagant amounts of money stock piled in a safe?). It seems when the money arrives they want to use it buying things they don’t really want they are just trying to look important in the eyes of the people they don’t necessarily like that much in the first place they just want to one-up them by seeiming to have more and be much more affluent than their neighbors and of course moving from their simpler neighborhood to the section of town that only the extremely wealthy abide in has them trying to settle in and find their place among the old money rich when they are obviously new money but doing their best to maintain that they are equal now to those they once looked up to if with eyes squinted in mistrust. It is a wonderful story with lovely touches of Bollywood fun. I liked it and the telling is wonderfully done.
