Undertown by Melvin Jules Bukiet, 295 pages
In a freak accident, Timothy and Jessamyn find themselves in a small sailboat in the storm sewer under the streets of Manhattan. They have just discovered that their parents are dating and neither is thrilled about the prospect but find that they actually get along better than they expected. The two decide to sail around and avoid going back or being found for at least a short while. Being underground fascinates them both and the want time to explore before heading above ground. However, there is more going on under Manhattan than they could have guessed and find themselves in trouble, with stolen boats and being separated. I really liked this story and think that a lot of kids would enjoy it. I would probably recommend it for fourth to sixth graders.
