Vampires in the Lemon Grove by Karen Russell, 243 pages
In this book of short stories a dejected teenager
discovers the universe is talking to him through objects left behind in a seagull’s nest. A community of girls held
captive in a silk factory, and slowly mutated into silk worms for the threads of silk in their bellies. A massage
therapist discovers she can heal a war veteran's pain by manipulating the
tattoos on his back. A group of boys stumble
upon a scarecrow that looks exactly like their missing
classmate whom they used to torment. Former president of the United States are reincarnated as horses and try to figure out why. The rules for tailgating in the Antarctic are explained, and two vampires in
a sun-drenched lemon grove try helplessly to slake their thirst for
blood.
I only enjoyed some the stories in this book, such as the Antarctic tailgating, and the reincarnated presidents. Most of them were all right while some of them I felt could've been longer. There was only one story that I didn't care very much for. Overall I think if you have the time and don't mind short stories this is decent book to read.
