Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War by Mary Roach Audio Book: 8 hours, 54 minutes Hardback Book: 288 pages
I love Mary Roach. She is not afraid of anything I don’t think. She does the wildest stuff for her research when writing about topics and this book will not disappoint. The stuff she puts herself through is thoroughly amazing. And she is THE BEST TEACHER! I have learned so many things from her books, she is bright, funny, totally entertaining and will literally do anything for research. In this book I learned why snipers can’t use zippers nor Velcro on their uniforms, (think about it), and the reader will learn so much about the evolution of military gear, backpacks, uniforms, and more prosthesis info than the reader will ever learn anywhere else. Mary actually went to school at the Navy Seals training center for submarines then spent time under the ocean in an actual nuclear submarine to understand what it is like and to get an understanding of the stresses involved. This is another excellent book by Mary Roach as all of her titles are. She talks about the testing, the science and the robotics of where the military is going almost to the point the reader will question should so much information be disclosed for the world to see? Reader, you will be amazed by all the information disclosed here it is like being given a tour of top secret information without limit and while I know this is only a glimpse at the actual phenomenal stuff occurring behind the closed doors of the military, reader be prepared to gasp at what is going on, what is in the planning stage and know that the line between science and science fiction is blurring – the armed forces are currently capable of the stuff of sci-fi novels from the past. As Mr. Spock would say, “Fascinating.” Read it, even if you aren’t big on military stuff as a topic you will be wonderstruck by this book, I’m talking jaw dropping, folks! And trust me, every book that Mary Roach has written is like that and I have read them all. Another great read by Mary Roach.
