Reserved for the Cat by Mercedes Lackey,
328 pages
This is one of the books in the Elemental Masters series, but all of these books can stand alone. Ninette is a dancer in the Paris Opera Ballet. Unfortunately, she is all alone, her mother having died and her father having disappeared when she was a baby. Ninette doesn’t make much money at her current level in the dance company and an unfortunate incident with another dancer causes her to lose her job. It is then that she finds out that the old cat who sometimes comes by her apartment can talk! The cat, called Thomas, hatches a plan to make her a star in England. Ninette has her doubts, especially when it begins to seem that someone is out to hurt, or possibly kill her.
