Monsters! & Other Stories by Gustavo Duarte, 152 pages
In this wordless graphic novel, Duarte presents three tales: of a farmer abducted by aliens, of two anthropomorphic birds attempting to avoid fate, and of a city attacked by three giant sea creatures. While his book is completely free of words, Duarte manages to tell some fantastically detailed stories through his artwork. All three stories are beautifully presented, though I particularly love the titular tale, which pits an elderly fisherman against the three monsters. The details in the waves and in the characters' expression are simply excellent. Sure, you could breeze through this pretty quickly, but I'd recommend taking a bit longer, and really studying the artwork. You won't be disappointed.
