This is the story of Elizabeth Ann who, until the age of 9
was raised by her Aunt Frances and Aunt Harriet since her parents died when she
was a baby. Aunt Frances wasn’t really
her aunt, but her cousin, but she had always called her Aunt Frances. Aunt Frances really understood her, the fears
that Elizabeth Ann had about big dogs, going to school by herself, examinations,
and the bad dreams she had, and her bird like appetite. Aunt Frances always understood. But when Aunt Harriet became ill, Elizabeth
Ann has to go stay with the Putney cousins on their farm so that Aunt Frances
can take care of her. The Putney
cousins, Aunt Abigail, Uncle Henry and Cousin Ann call her Betsy and seem to
think that Betsy can do a lot more than she has ever done in her life. At first Betsy can’t wait until Aunt Frances
can come and rescue her but soon finds that there are many things on the farm
to love, like her own kitten and making applesauce and butter herself. Although this is an old-fashioned story it is
a really great one that will still have appeal to kids today.
