Gorgeous by Paul Rudnick, 327 pages
Becky Randle is completely ordinary until the day her mother dies and she finds a phone number in a jewelry box. When she calls the number she is offered a plane ticket to New York and $1000. Despite her reservations, Becky agrees to go and there she meets Tom Kelly, the world’s most renowned fashion designer, who wants to make a deal. He will make her three dresses and she will become the world’s most beautiful woman. The catch is that she has to fall in love and get married within a year or she will lose her beauty and just become ordinary Becky Randle. Becky, although at first she believes that this a hoax, again agrees to the deal, and Tom’s first dress transforms Becky in to Rebecca, who is perfect in every way. Being Rebecca is wonderful. She is on the cover of Vogue, starring in a movie, and is meeting the most beautiful, influential, and famous people in the word. But there is a part of her that feels like she is living a huge lie and isn’t quite sure how to reconcile the old Becky with Rebecca. I really liked this story, despite the whole perfect fairly tale the author has going. I think that the story is more likely to appeal to teen girls, especially those who like fairy tale type stories and romances.
