Mr. Rosenblum Dreams In English by Natasha Solomons, 355 pages
Mr. Rosenblum is a Jewish refugee from Germany, who settled in England during the war with his wife and daughter. He wants nothing more than to be a proper English gentlemen, to fit in and be accepted. This story chronicles his life from his arrival in England until he is a much older man. Mr. Rosenblum has followed a list of rules all of his life, rules for fitting into English society, and feels that he has mostly succeeded, but one major thing has eluded him. Mr. Rosenblum wants to be a member of a golf club. He sees it as the last true test of his English success, but no one will admit him because he is a foreigner. So, Mr. Rosenblum decides to build his own golf course and have his own club. Half of the book takes place during the time he is building the course and is about the difficulties he has building, with the people in the village where he is building, and with his wife. This was a really good story. People who like historical fiction, true life, slightly humorous stories will find this book engaging.
