The Blood Whisperer by Zoe Sharp 388 pages
Kelly Jacks in an expert in crime scenes, understanding how blood patterns can reveal a wealth of information. She's at the top of her game . . . until six years ago, when she woke up next to a murdered man, and the knife in her hands. Unfortunately, she has no memory of the crime and while she trusted the evidence would prove her innocent, it didn't. Now, released after serving a sentence for involuntary manslaughter, Kelly must try to piece her life together. Working as a crime-scene cleaner, she happens upon a scene that seems to be suicide. However, her instincts tell her otherwise. When she follows those instincts, she winds up getting into something quite dangerous, and unable to know who to trust.
This is the first book by Zoe Sharp that I've read. I enjoyed her pacing and how she makes this story into a pretty thoughtful thriller. Kelly is an interesting character, and while the plot was sometimes a bit convoluted, Sharp kept me guessing until close to the end. While you have suspicions about what is happening, the real question is what's going to happen to Kelly. While she's obviously intelligent and street-smart, the fact that she winds up on the run, not knowing who to trust, makes her situation very precarious. The short chapters and tense pace made this one a pageturner.
