Okay Fine Whatever: The Year I Went from Being Afraid of Everything to Only Being Afraid of Most Things by Courtenay Hameister 320 pages
"The "hilarious and poignant" story of one chronically anxious woman's quest to become braver by seeking out the kinds of experiences she's spent her life avoiding. (Cheryl Strayed) "
This book is by a woman who spent years as a the host of a popular radio show, yet suffered anxiety attacks bad enough to live in a state of near-constant anxiety and dread. In her mid-forties, she decided to put an end to that cycle and spent a year doing little things that scared her --- "things that the average person might consider doing for a half second before deciding: "nope." "
Like what? She spent an afternoon in a sensory deprivation tank, got high (legally because she lives in Oregon) in the middle of the workday, braved 28 first dates, went to a fellatio class . . . there's a whole lot of adventures in this book. I found it interesting to read and actually felt like I could be friends with this author. Was it laugh-out-loud funny? More smirk-tastic, although I did start laughing out loud at one point --- but I was overtired and reading before bed. What I did like is that the author tried a bunch of things that she normally would have avoided and actually learned a lot about her anxiety and how to better handle it. So even if she doesn't continue with trying all kinds of things that intimidate her, she'll navigate through the world a little more anxiety-free.
