Early Medieval Art surveys the art of Europe between the accession of Charlemagne at the start of the ninth century and the renovation of St Denis in the middle of the twelfth. In it, author Beckwith thoroughly demonstrates the beauty and variety of the art produced in this period, particularly the unique Carolingian and Romanesque styles which successfully synthesized Classical, Byzantine, and Germanic influences. Best of all, despite the book's small size, it contains hundreds of illustrations, a surprising number of which are in color.
