A Corner Of White by Jaclyn Moriarty, 373 pages
I really enjoyed this book. It starts a little slowly but picks up and gets very exciting once you figure out what’s going on. There are two stories happening in this book simultaneously and part of the way through, the two stories entwine. The difficulty is that, they are happening in two different worlds. On part is happening in the Kingdom of Cello, where Elliott is determined to find his father. His father was attacked and taken by a Purple that left Elliott’s uncle dead and Elliott believes that his father must still be alive. Although some people believe that he ran off with the physics teacher and murdered his brother before leaving, Elliott knows that story isn’t true and is determined to find his father and uncover the truth. The other part of the story takes place in Cambridge, England, which the people of Cello call the World, where a girl named Madeleine and her mother have settled after running away from their old life, which included her father. Madeleine’s family was rich in their old life and she and her mother have almost nothing now but her mother seems to content to stay where they are. Elliott and Madeleine start to communicate, by letter, through a crack between the worlds. Their correspondence helps them each understand their own lives a little better, and may in the end, save their lives.
