Raven Flight by Juliet Marillier, 406 pages
Neryn is now part of the rebellion but to be useful, she must be trained in her gift as a Caller. The rebels plan to start their coup in the next year and a half, otherwise they will lose some of their crucial support. For Neryn to be ready she must seek out the four Guardians, the major magic entities and ask if they will train her. One Guardian she has already seen and one other is relatively easy to find and access, but one has been in a deep sleep for many years and shows no signs of waking and no one knows exactly where the fourth is. Neryn sets out with Tali to guard her and help her to find the Guardians. Their hope is to find two of the Guardians and be back at Shadowfell before winter sets in. They find the Hag of the Isles, who agrees to teach her. Can Neryn learn quickly enough to have time to move on to the other Guardians, or will she be distracted by worries of her beloved, Flint, a double agent in the King’s Enforcers, whose loyalties seem to be suspect by the King. The sequel to Shadowfell, I thought this book was a little bit better than the first. While the book doesn’t really end in a crucial way, it’s clear that there will be more books in the series, as the overall story is not finished. Teen fantasy lovers will enjoy this series.
