Billy is starting second grade and he’s a little
worried. He’s worried that he won’t be
smart. He fell and hit his head and the
doctor said he was fine but he heard his mom and dad talking about it and now
he’s worried. The rest of the book takes
Billy through the school year. There is
a section that focuses on his teacher, when Billy thinks that Ms. Silver might
think that he was making fun of her so he comes up with a plan so that Ms.
Silver will know that he likes her. The
next section is about his dad, who he calls Papa, but he thinks that maybe Papa
is too babyish and he might want to start calling him Dad. In the next session, Billy tries to enlist
his sister’s help to stay awake all night.
Of course, his sister, Sal, is only three, so the plan may not work so
well. In the last section, Billy has to
write a poem about one of his family members and he chooses his mom. This is a nice, easy chapter book for younger
readers. Kids that like real life
stories should enjoy it.
