This is a story about Little Hawk, a Native American boy in
the early to mid 1600’s. When he is 11
years old he goes on a spirit journey.
He calls it his “proving time” and he will go for three months, living
on his own. He will fast until his
spirit guide, his “Manitou”, appears to him and after that he will continue to
live alone until it is time to return to the village. It is also a story about a Pilgrim boy, John
Wakeley, who meets Little Hawk when he is a young boy and later learns Little
Hawk’s language. He becomes a friend to
the Native Americans in the area, but he is unusual among the Pilgrim settlers. There is a ghost in this story, but I
hesitate to call it supernatural. This
was a very good story and kids who like historical fiction about early America
will like this book. The author’s
timeline and note at the end were also interesting and informative for kids who
want to learn more.
