Dirty Magic by Jaye Wells 416 pages
Dirty Magic is the first of a new series of author Jaye Wells and the author has created a world where magic is part of life but use of magic can be considered either good (legitimate) or dirty. Kate Prospero is a cop whose job it is to fight dirty magic and prevent the spread of addicting bad magic. However her background as a former member of the magic cartel is preventing her from being promoted until she gets a place on a special task force looking to stop a new and dangerous designer magic with deadly outcomes.
If you took out the work magic and substituted drugs, the novel is a fairly straightforward police procedural with plenty of action. Character development is fairly shallow outside the main character and there is certainly plenty of room for the storyline to be improved in subsequent books.
