On Such as Full Sea by Change-Rae Lee - 352 Pages
In a future United States society has evolved into 3 levels; the charters (elite class), the B-more (worker class) and the outlanders (undesireables). The worker class came to the United States from China as their cities became uninhabitable from pollution. One group of workers live in B-More (formerly Baltimore) and raise food stuffs to be used in the Charter settlements. One day Reg, one worker and boyfriend of Fan is removed suddenly without explanation.
This dystopian novel has several levels within it. On the primary level the heroine Fan sets out to find her boyfriend and her journey is detailed throughout the book. However Fan is such a passive character, the book is not so much about her but how she becomes a symbol in a class struggle between the increasingly left behind worker class and the elite class. Fan's inner motivations are largely unexplained and by the second half of the book she may as well of just been a manikin for all that was explained.
I did finish the book just because I wanted to see the ending but I should have just skipped to the end because the middle was not worth my time.
