There will be Dragons by John Ringo, 719 pages
This book, and the resulting Council Wars series, came
recommended by Novelist. Novelist is one of the databases the library
subscribes to and by imputing what you like to read it can make suggestions.
This book came off a search of books like George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and
Fire series.
There will be Dragons is set in a future utopian society where no one has
to work and everything can be materialized out of thin air. That all changes
when the vast power network that allows for all these comforts vanishes and
plunges the entire society into the middle ages.
The book is exceptionally well done and in my opinion
accurately portrays how society would react. If all power was lost tomorrow how
would you get food, how would you survive? Here in St Louis how far would we
have to go to find somewhere that there would be either food, or land to be
able to grow food and livestock? While most people can easily go a week or more
on their staple ingredients, if the power would be gone for more than that the
stores would be looted and from there who knows.
I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the
series and seeing how Ringo wraps this all up.
