Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo, 231 pages
Ulysses is a squirrel who was nearly killed by a vacuum cleaner. The experience gave him super powers. He can type and fly and defeat evil, in the form of Mr. Kline, a cat. Flora, who rescued and named Ulysses, is a cynic but she believes in Ulysses. Flora’s parents are divorced and Flora lives with her mom but she thinks that she would rather live with her dad, since her mom seems to like her shepherdess lamp better than she likes Flora. An odd but sweet story, partly told in comic book form, lots of kids would enjoy this light fantastical tale of a girl and her squirrel.
