Shadowfell by Juliet Marillier, 410 pages
Neryn’s father trades her away in a game of chance. Neryn is terrified of what the man who wins her wants, but Flint, the winner, allows her to go her own way after giving her some provisions. Neryn and her father have been wandering for some time now because Neryn has the Sight and possibly other Canny powers, which is prohibited by the current King. Neryn is determined to go to Shadowfell and join with the rebels there but can she avoid the King’s Enforcers who would kill or capture her because of her powers? And can she avoid causing trouble to the Good Folk, the fey, who may try to help her on the way? This is a pretty good fantasy tale that is the first in a trilogy. Teens who like fantasy and adventure will enjoy this book.
